SCHOLARSHIPS
For over a century, Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit (MMPN – Detroit) has provided financial support to nursing students and continues to do so by awarding scholarships to deserving junior and senior-level students.
Scholarships are granted annually based on our fundraising activities and the amount of dollars raised. The Scholarship Committee is responsible for reviewing applications and determining eligibility.
Deadline to submit your application and documents is SUBMIT BY: Thursday, January 15, 2026
- Must be African American.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing for registered nurse (RN) licensure.
- Must have completed at least 6 nursing courses (not including prerequisites).
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, with a 3.0 or higher GPA in at least two nursing courses.
- Resident of the Detroit Metropolitan area.
- Provide evidence of productive leadership within the nursing program.
- Attend a Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit business meeting to meet the membership upon candidate selection.
- Attend the award recognition ceremony to receive the award.
- The financial award will be mailed to your educational institution.
- Submit all required documentation on or before the specified deadline.
- Become an active member of Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit upon passing the NCLEX-RN.
- The first year of membership dues and assessments will be automatically deducted from the scholarship award amount.

d. Awards - Two letters of reference: one professional letter (nursing professional on university/college letterhead with a signature) and one personal letter.
- Current official transcript (sent electronically directly to recipient: Sequoia Mitchell, email: scholarship@mmpndetroit.org)
- Community Service Involvement Documentation (on letterhead with signature)
- Essay must be one page, single-spaced and 3 paragraphs with cited sources in APA format. Essay must include:
Paragraph 1: Personal Vision
Paragraph 2: Research on the history of Mary Eliza Mahoney
Paragraph 3: How joining MMPN – Detroit will impact your leadership and career path

THE OLIVIAN DESOUZA COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD
“To Serve Humanity”
The Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit will award this distinguished award to a junior or senior level nursing student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and service in the community, as well as, maintaining academic requirements in their respective nursing program. This is not a financial award.
Deadline to submit your application and documents is SUBMIT BY: THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2026
Olivian DeSouza Community Leadership Award Criteria
- Must be African American.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program for Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
- Must have completed at least 6 nursing courses (not including prerequisites).
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, with a 3.0 or higher GPA in at least two nursing courses.
- Resident of the Detroit Metropolitan area
- Attend a personal interview by the MMPN Scholarship Committee.
- Attend a Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit business meeting to meet the membership.
- Become an active member of Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit upon passing the NCLEX-RN.

Awards
- Two letters of reference: one professional letter (nursing professional on university/college letterhead with a signature) and one personal letter.
- Evidence of leadership and volunteer service to the community:· Letter from the community service organization (must be on the organization’s letterhead)
- The act(s) of leadership and volunteer service do not have to be directly related to nursing. Applicant does not have to be a scholarship candidate.
