LEADERSHIP APPLICATION

SCHOLARSHIPS

For 97 years, Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit has provided scholarships to students who are studying to be registered nurses and are either in their junior or senior year.

Scholarships are granted annually based on our fundraising activities and amount of dollars raised. The scholarship Committee is responsible for reviewing applications and determining eligibility.

Deadline to submit your application and documents is WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2024

  1.  Must be African American
  2.  Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing [for registered nurse (RN)]
  3. Must have completed the first year of the nursing courses
  4. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 with 3.0 or above in at least two nursing courses.
  5. Two letters of references: one professional (on letterhead) and one personal
  6. Resident of the Detroit Metropolitan area
  7. Evidence of your productive leadership in the nursing program
  8. Attend a Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit meeting to receive the award.
  9. The financial award will be mailed to your educational institution.
  10. Submit to the Scholarship Committee semester grades, graduation date, and NCLEX-RN results after receipt of scholarship
  11. Become an active member upon passing the NCLEX-RN.
  12. The first year of dues and assessments is automatically deducted from the award amount

  2. Professional reference letters (one from an instructor with school letterhead included)
  3. Current official transcript sent to www.mmpndetroit.org
  4. Personal essay that addresses your research from the literature regarding the history of Mary Mahoney
    a. Essay should include how joining MMPN – Detroit will impact your
    leadership and career path
    i. Cited sources must be in APA format
    b. Essay must be one page, single-spaced

THE OLIVIAN DESOUZA COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD

“To Serve Humanity”

The Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses – Detroit will award this distinguished award to a junior or senior level nursing student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and service in the community, as well as, maintaining academic requirements in their respective nursing program.

Deadline to submit your application and documents is WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2024

Olivian DeSouza Community Leadership Award Criteria

  1. Must be African-American.
  2. Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing (RN)
  3. Must be in the junior or senior year of the nursing program.
  4. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0, with 3.0 or above in at least 2 nursing courses.
  1. Resident of Michigan
  2. Evidence of leadership and volunteer service to the community.
  • The act(s) of leadership and volunteer service do not have to be directly related to nursing. Applicant does not have to be a scholarship candidate.
  • Letter from the community service organization (must be on the organization’s letterhead)
  1. Attend a personal interview by the MMPN Scholarship Committee.
  2. Attend a Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses meeting/scholarship awards ceremony.
  3. Become an active member upon passing the NCLEX-RN exam.

 

To be included in the application packet: a resume, reference letters, current official transcript. Narrative to include detailed description of your volunteer service to the community and how joining MMPN will impact your leadership and career path. Submit research on the history of Mary Mahoney.
